The warlock Gul’dan leads the Horde to invade Azeroth using a magic portal, and the movie follows Anduin Lothar of Stormwind and Durotan of the Frostwolf clan as heroes caught on opposite sides of a burgeoning conflict. A few human heroes and rebel Orcs must work together to try and put an end to the real evil that is behind this war and restore peace.

The movie’s relationship between Legendary Pictures and the game’s creator, Blizzard Entertainment, was first announced in 2006. On May 24, 2016, Warcraft had its Paris premiere.

On June 10, 2016, Universal Pictures distributed the film in the US. Based on its enormous popularity in China, where it made $225.5 million, the movie made $47.4 million in the US and $439 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing video game-based movie until The Super Mario Bros.

Movie passed it in 2023. However, following international marketing and distribution, it fell short of its break-even figure of $450–500 million and garnered largely unfavorable reviews from critics.

Warcraft Story

Based on the well-known video game series of the same name, the 2016 movie Warcraft. It describes the First War between the humans of Azeroth and the orcs of Draenor.

Draenor’s orcs are perishing. Their world is being destroyed by fel magic, an unknown power. The orc warlock Gul’dan is convinced that by opening a portal to the realm of Azeroth, he may save his people. In order to fuel the portal, he utilizes fel magic to extinguish the life force of draenei, a benign alien race, who are held hostage.

Azeroth is reached by Gul’dan leading a small warband via the portal. They swiftly outnumber any opposing human forces. Anduin Lothar, the most dependable advisor to King Llane Wrynn of Stormwind, is asked to spearhead the defense of Azeroth. The wizard Khadgar, the orc chief Durotan, and the half-orc Garona Halforcen are among the heroes Lothar gathers.

For dominion of Azeroth, humanity and orcs engage in a brutal conflict. The strength of fel magic is helping Gul’dan’s armies win over time. The only way to stop Gul’dan, Durotan and Lothar realize, is to obliterate the portal. They take a few of heroes on a suicide quest to find the portal.

The heroes manage to shut down the portal, but it comes at a price. Lothar and Durotan are both dead, while Garona sustains serious injuries. Their sacrifice, however, protects Azeroth from Gul’dan’s armies. Although the First War is done, the battle between humans and orcs is still very much alive.

The Warcraft movie does not follow the video game’s mythology exactly. The timeline has been shortened, and several character backstories have been altered. The movie nevertheless successfully captures the essence of the video games while telling a gripping tale of war and battle.

You’ll probably appreciate the movie if you’re a fan of the Warcraft video games. You can still appreciate the movie as a stand-alone fantasy adventure even if you’re not familiar with the games.

Warcraft Review

The movie had to work within a number of limitations. In addition to the well-established Warcraft mythos and storytelling, there was also the horrible stigma associated with gaming adaptations, and there were the numerous prominent CGI figures who had to appear realistic rather than like something from Pixar or Disney. I didn’t have high hopes in light of that.

But the film exceeded all of my hopes and offered me encouragement for the future. The narrative is something that occurs at the conclusion of Mythos Chapter III and the start of Mythos Chapter IV. Given the throngs of World of Warcraft players who weren’t even born when that game was released, telling the story of Warcraft I as a video game was another risky choice.

The battle tribes of the unidentified Orcs, who are fleeing from their dying world through a portal powered by the very force that destroyed it, are pitted against the peaceful realm of Azeroth. A girl who is half human and half orc plays a key role in explaining the nature of the Orcs, their goals, and how they came to the realm.

The mature story was obviously nicely smoothed out, the characters were well-developed, the graphics were good, the screenplay had few gaps, and so on. The only issue is that it’s only the first of many, and while the major conflict has been finished, there has been no resolution for the character storylines.

The actors came from a variety of TV shows, including Legends of Tomorrow, Preacher, and Vikings, to mention a few. Ben Foster was the lone actor who primarily acted in big-screen movies. It demonstrates both how film and television are merging (perhaps with games as well), as well as how performers from popular movies are afraid of getting stuck in bad game adaptations. Perhaps things will start to change with the success of this and, one can only hope, Assassin’s Creed.
