Estefana Gutiérrez Lázaro mysteriously passed away after using a ouija board in the Vallecas case of 1991, which served as the inspiration for this fictional story.
Veronica Movie Story
In 1991, the movie begins in the middle of an emergency call to the emergency services from a young girl. Before the connection is cut off, she shouts that something is chasing after her brother and makes a terrified sound.
Three days are skipped in the movie. Verónica, a 15-year-old girl, shares a home in Vallecas, a working-class neighborhood of Madrid, with her mother and three younger siblings. Verónica is in charge of her younger siblings, twins Lucia and Irene, and Antoito, since their mother works long hours at a bar to support the family after their recently deceased father. Her teacher recounts how some prehistoric tribes utilized eclipses to perform human sacrifices and conjure evil spirits on the day of the solar eclipse.
Verónica enters the basement with her pals Rosa and Diana to conduct a séance with a Ouija board. Verónica wishes to get in touch with her late father and her deceased boyfriend Diana, both of whom were killed in motorcycle accidents. When the glass cup gets too hot, Rosa and Diana pull their hands back. When the eclipse occurs, the cup shattering while Verónica’s hand is still holding it, cutting her finger and dripping blood onto the board. Verónica screams demonically before being unresponsive and continuing to whisper. The school nurse tells her when she awakens that she most likely passed out due to an iron shortage.
When Verónica starts having strange experiences, her friends start avoiding her. She returns to the school basement in search of clarification and discovers the school’s elderly, blind nun, affectionately known by the children as “Sister Death.” The nun attempts to urge the evil spirit to depart but to no avail as she tells how the séance bonded a dark spirit to her.
Verónica resolves to hold the séance with her siblings out of desperation. She instructs Antoito to paint the walls with protective symbols, but he accidentally flicks to the incorrect page and paints invocational symbols instead. The spirit refuses to say farewell when she asks it to. After contacting the police, she and her siblings flee. She then realizes that she had imagined holding Antoito and was not truly doing so. Actually, her brother is in a closet hiding. He refuses to accompany her when she finds him.
Verónica realizes she has been possessed by the demon her entire life and has been harming her siblings under its control when she looks in the mirror and sees the demon. She tries to cut her own throat to end the possession, but the demon stops her. When the cops arrive, they discover her unconscious and being attacked by an unidentified force. A terrified investigator watches the scene as the medics bring her and Antoito away. The detective is notified that Verónica has passed away as he observes a photograph of her catch fire.
He recalls strange paranormal activity taking place in Madrid in 1996, five years later. On the first police record in Spain where a police officer certifies having witnessed paranormal activity, it is explained that the movie is based on actual events.
