ODD Thomas Review

On a trip to Vegas, I read Dean Koontz’s “Odd Thomas,” and I remember thinking that it might make a good movie someday, maybe even a franchise (as it has in book form). I was mistaken, as Stephen Sommers has shown.

In Pico Mundo, California, an apparently unremarkable fry cook named Odd Thomas (Anton Yelchin) declares, “I may see dead people but then, by God, I do something about it.” In the opening scene of the film, Odd faces the killer of a young girl who has gone to him for assistance. Odd is not merely a passive communicator with the other side; he sees spirits and then works to bring them to justice.

The scene that follows instantly sets “Odd Thomas” up for disaster. Sommers’ demand for action stunts acquired on the sets of “The Mummy” and “Van Helsing” smothers the sequence in mind-numbing gibberish as Odd pursues the killer through neighborhoods to a pool party.

One can instantly tell that a faulty project is being covered in aspects meant to mask its numerous narrative and character errors thanks to quick zooms, slow-motion combat, loud electronic music, and freeze frames. It bears the clumsy, careless appearance of a “Scream” knockoff made for straight-to-video.
