Jailer Movie Story
Nelson Dilipkumar wrote and directed the action thriller Jailer, which will be released in 2023 in the Indian Tamil language. Rajinikanth, Keerthi Suresh, Prakash Raj, Vijay Sethupathi, and Nayanthara all appear in the Sun Pictures-produced movie. It is Rajinikanth and Nelson’s first joint project, and Rajinikanth and Keerthi Suresh’s second following Petta in 2017.
After learning that a gang is attempting to free their leader from prison, Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth), a harsh yet sympathetic jailer, sets out to stop them.
The movie premiered on August 14, 2023. Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising Rajinikanth’s acting and Nelson’s directing while criticizing the movie’s length and running time. The movie was a financial triumph, making over 300 crores in total revenue.
A harsh yet sympathetic jailer named Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth) is in command of a high-security prison at the start of the movie. Pandian is renowned for his no-nonsense demeanor and readiness to face down the most challenging criminals.
One day, Pandian learns that a gang is attempting to break into the prison and free their leader, Varman (Vikram Prabhu). Varman is a deadly felon who has murdered numerous victims. Pandian sets out to find the gang because he is determined to prevent them from saving Varman.
Pandian discovers quickly that Vinayak (Vijay Sethupathi), the gang’s leader, is a merciless criminal who would stop at nothing to acquire what he wants. Vinayak is out to kill Pandian because of a personal grudge he has against the man.
In a game of cat and mouse, Pandian and Vinayak try to outsmart one another. The lives of numerous people and the future of the jail are at risk, thus the stakes are quite high.
Finally, Pandian is successful in preventing the gang from rescuing Varman. Vinayak is also defeated by him in a one-on-one battle. Pandian, who is acclaimed as a hero, is still employed as the jailer, guarding the facility against intruders.
A well-made action thriller with a compelling plot and standout performances from the cast, Jailer. Rajinikanth gives a strong performance while being in top form. Additionally talented is Keerthi Suresh, who gets along well with Rajinikanth. In their supporting roles, Prakash Raj and Vijay Sethupathi both do well.
The length of the movie is its only flaw. The movie might have been cut down by at least 30 minutes despite running for more than two and a half hours.
Overall, Jailer is a competent action thriller with a compelling narrative and solid acting from the ensemble. Rajinikanth’s performance and Nelson’s direction make it worthwhile to see.

Jailer Movie Review
A quote from our Apoorva Raagangal (1975) review of Rajinikanth’s debut movie reads, “Newcomer Rajinikanth is dignified and impressive.” The actor’s majesty and impressiveness have been preserved even after almost 50 years; this is seen in the “Vayasanalum un style-um, azhagum…” line from Padayappa, which has become imprinted in the brains of his followers. The combination of this seasoned charisma and the whimsical touches added by director Nelson make their most recent project, Jailer, a fun entertainment.
The seasoned actor portrays Muthuvel Pandian in the movie, a retired jailer who spends his free time assisting in the filming of movies for his grandson’s YouTube channel. Trouble comes knocking at Muthu’s door when his son Arjun (Vasanth Ravi), a diligent police officer, delves deeply into an idol smuggling ring.
Muthu returns to the world he freely left behind, blaming it all on his sincerity, which has evidently rubbed off on his son.
Nelson’s first three films all had very straightforward stories that were enhanced by the director’s clever concepts, with the exception of amazing graphics, outrageous humor, and lead characters having deadpan faces; Jailer is no different.
In fact, Jailer may remind older audiences of Thangappathakkam (1974), while younger audiences are sure to be reminded by Kamal Haasan’s most recent smash blockbuster Vikram. Both recent movies are about fathers who were previously officials in service but are now out for revenge, with their trusted connections, to avenge their son’s demise, aside from starring the renowned stars in age-appropriate roles.
The similarities, however, end there because Jailer is an entire cinematic world condensed into a single film, whereas Vikram is a page from one. Nelson crams a lot of characters into Jailer, and although though most of them only have a small amount of screen time, they all nearly seem to fit together like the parts of a big puzzle.
Jailer’s racy screenplay serves as the film’s main pillar, and from the very beginning, we are thrust into the action. The movie picks up steam until intermission as soon as Muthu leaves on a mission.
The second part of the movie is when it starts to veer a little too much into erratic area. Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar’s cameos are welcome additions, but other characters that are introduced in the second half aren’t as well-received.
