Hereditary Story

Ari Aster wrote and directed the supernatural horror movie “Hereditary” in 2018. Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne play the main parts in the movie. “Hereditary” has received praise for its original approach to horror storytelling and is known for its disturbing atmosphere, psychological tension, and surprising twists.

Plot Summary:

The Graham family is central to the story, with Toni Collette’s portrayal of Annie Graham, the mother, receiving the most of the attention. After the mysterious and reclusive Ellen, Annie’s mother, passes away, she begins to uncover terrible family truths that have been kept a secret for many years. Grief, trauma, inherited mental disease, and evil forces that might be affecting the family are some of the issues the movie examines.

As the plot develops, Annie, a miniature artist who recreates her own life events in her work, finds it difficult to deal with her mother’s passing and the rocky relationship she had with her. Gabriel Byrne’s portrayal of her husband Steve makes an effort to offer emotional support, but the family connection is further strained by the weird and unsettling occurrences that transpire.

At a party, Peter, Annie’s son (Alex Wolff), unintentionally takes home Charlie (Milly Shapiro), Charlie’s sister, who has a nut allergy. Charlie dies as a result of a horrible accident. This incident acts as the starting point for a string of strange things that start to happen to the family.

In a program for mourning families, Annie finds peace and makes a friend by the name of Joan (played by Ann Dowd). Annie is introduced to the idea of using séances to communicate with the dead by Joan. Annie engages in a number of ritualistic activities as a result of her growing obsession with communicating with her loved ones who have passed on.

The boundaries between reality and the supernatural become increasingly hazy as the Graham family is gradually overwhelmed by the supernatural and psychological horrors that emerge. The family members are confronted by their own inner demons and plagued by nightmare visions.

Through gloomy photography, frightening images, and a melancholy musical backdrop, the movie creates tension. As it goes farther into the darkness that has been passed down through the generations of the Graham family, it fosters a feeling of dread and emotional struggle.

Its powerful and startling scenes have made “Hereditary” a thought-provoking and unsettling examination of familial tragedy and the supernatural. The movie has established a reputation as a contemporary horror classic thanks to its rich storyline, frightening images, and surprising plot twists.

Hereditary Review

Hereditary is, in many respects, the horror film I’ve been anxiously anticipating for so many years. Despite my passionate support for the genre, I genuinely believe that contemporary horror has forgotten how to create a movie that is as genuinely unnerving as the best classic horror movies. A modern wide-release horror movie is frequently just a series of jump scares linked together with a cliched plot that serves just as a vehicle for the jump scares.

Audiences have been trained to perceive and evaluate these movies more like carnival rides than like films. The modern horror fan goes to their local theater and pays their money in the hopes that their chosen horror movie will “deliver the goods,” so to speak: frighten them enough times (scaling appropriately with the film’s runtime, of course), and provide them with the action shots (blood, gore, graphic murders, well-lit and up-close views of the relevant CGI monster, etc.). A horror film is laughed at and labeled as the “worst film I’ve ever seen” if it fails to deliver on those promises.

That’s why I put quotation marks around it: as the credits for this movie played, a displeased moviegoer behind me shouted those same words across the theater. He was genuinely eager to share his opinions with us.
