Delhi Safari Review
Greetings from Animal Planet! Instead of Tellyland’s jaws, paws, and claws’ bloody, gut-filled version, check out our own animated jungle mein mangal. Yes. The beasts have arrived. If you look around the city, you might see a lone leopard at a “zebra-crossing,” a bear working out in your gym, or a bandar for the swift local train to Virar. Welcome to the (concrete) jungle, new inhabitants. What on earth are they doing in the land of domesticated animals (i.e., people)? We will divulge.
Introducing the cub leopard, Yuvraj (no, not Salman Khan), also known as Yuvi (Swini Khara), and his mother, Begum (Urmila Matondkar). Boman Irani plays Bagga the bear, Govinda plays Bajrangi, the chief of the vanar-sena, who wears a gamcha around his head, and Akshaye Khanna plays Alex, the popat and the only one who can communicate in human language.
As men from Mumbai’s civilized culture bulldoze into their forest region to construct tower after tower, there is suddenly a crisis in their “wild-life.” But Yuvi isn’t quite ready to leave his country just yet. He rallies the other janwars for jung, and together they travel to Delhi to demonstrate outside the Parliament.
The fact that this animal kingdom is a creation of Bollywood is amusing; they ought to have relocated to the Film City studios. They perform slow-motion action scenes that may have been influenced by “Ek Tha Tiger,” sing and dance the garba, say lines like “Mere paas maa hai,” and exchange jaadu ki jhappis (Munnabhai chale jungle mein, haan?). Additionally, there are monsters like an evil hyena named Kaalia (Prem Chopra), who sings Tandoori Nights, and a parinda with tattoos that resemble those on “Ghajini” beneath his wing. Batman the bat is also a fan of Himesh Reshammiya.
Additionally, these intelligent animals discuss casting couches and saas-bahu telecasts as well (more power to Ekta Kapoor!). Not at all. They produce headlines and provide live quotes to the media (luckily, they aren’t tweeting yet).
Director Nikhil Advani has emphasized the ongoing conflict between humans and animals, the urgent need to protect wildlife, and the negative effects of deforestation with satire, spoof, humor, and wit. His creatures entertain and narrate the tale in true Bollywood fashion (too many songs and too much drama ‘foxes’ the plot). The issue is that he drags his feet and makes it seem more like a long journey than a safari.
Some of the 3D effects are impressive and among the best we’ve seen in India, but many moments resemble ‘Lion King’ deja vu. The stars of this show are Alex and Bajrangi, with their dramatics and rip-roaring banter. Even while children will like the cartoon characters, there are also some things for grownups. That is, the “real” Men of the jungle.
Go watch it once, Hakuna Matata. And bring your cubs with you.
