Bhola Shankar Review
With this Telugu adaptation of the Ajith-starring film Vedalam, Meher Ramesh puts his luck and your tolerance to the test. The movie, which starts out like a popcorn flick, ends up looking like a mash-mix of three unrelated tales. Even worse, all of these tales are at best obsolete and at worst unfunny.
In order to enroll his sister Mahalakshmi nicknamed Maha (Keerthy Suresh) in an arts college, Shankar (Chiranjeevi) travels from Hyderabad to Kolkata with her. To make ends meet, he decides to drive a taxi and meets criminal defense attorney Lasya (Tamannaah Bhatia). Maha has a love-hate relationship with Shankar, but his brother Srikar (Sushanth A) is in love with her.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata, something far more serious is going on while Meher is busy making jokes about Lasya, bringing in Brahmanandam and Vennela Kishore to lighten the mood, etc. Because of crooked police, young girls are being abducted all throughout the city, and the law enforcement is clueless about how to catch the mafia.
Shankar is introduced in the movie as a simple-minded man who seems too wonderful to be true. But as the movie goes on, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems. And you already know where it’s going if you’ve seen any hero-obsessed Indian movies.
The fact that Meher struggles to balance between displaying something serious, cracking a joke, and tossing in a duet song for good measure in the first half of the movie doesn’t help matters. After the intermission, the movie doesn’t fare much better either, with the poor writing failing to engage you in the story’s central themes—the women who are being trafficked and Shankar’s connection with Maha. Only a few moments near the movie’s finish perform a tiny bit better.
Meher indulges in fan service by writing occasionally effective dialogue regarding Chiranjeevi’s fame. He also makes an excessive amount of effort to pay tribute to Ram Charan or Pawan Kalyan.
You would flinch at portions of Sreemukhi and Rashmi Gautam’s sequences with Chiranjeevi because they are only there to be objectified. This movie has a lot going on, but nothing really seems to stick. The music of Mahati Swara Sagar is at best mediocre. However, Dudley’s photography enhances the picture.
Chiranjeevi tries his best to give his character life, but there is only so much he can do to improve an antiquated movie that doesn’t offer anything new. As trustworthy as ever, Keerthy Suresh does a good job in her role.
Although Tamannaah’s dubbing should have been improved, the actress does a good job acting. Others who do well include Sushanth A, Murli Sharma, Brahmaji, etc. To have an impact, Tarun Arora, Sayaji Shinde, Ravi Shankar, and Shawar Ali needed stronger personas.
The abrupt transitions between the various parts of the movie hurt Bholaa Shankar, and the writing required a skilled hand. Even Chiranjeevi and Keerthy cannot save the situation.
